The name Indian Rupee (INR) comes from the rupee, a silver currency worth 40 pieces of copper that were initially minted by Sultan Sher Shah Suri. During British control, and later in 1770, paper rupees were issued. Although the rupee is divisible into 100 paise, currencies with values of Re 1 are the lowest denominations in use as of 2020.
