GST full form: Goods and Services Tax

GST full form: GST stands for Goods and Services Tax in its complete form. Goods and Services Tax is the full name of GST in Hindi. It’s an indirect tax that was created to simplify India’s complicated indirect tax system. The State Government had the ability to collect taxes largely on the sale of goods and products, while the Central Government had the power to levy taxes on the production of commodities and services, according to the Indian Constitution. As a result of the various types of taxes that existed in India, the current tax system in India became extremely complex, and GST was created to simplify it. Due to the cancellation of various levies and taxes in the past, it is also known as “One Nation, One Tax.”

GST, in contrast to VAT, is a destination-based tax. This means that it will be paid in the state where the goods or services are purchased by the end-user or consumer. GST will have no impact on exports or direct taxes such as income tax, company tax, or capital gains tax. Except for crude petroleum, motor spirit, diesel, aviation turbine fuel, and natural gas, all items would be subject to GST. Because India is a federal country with the right for both the central and state governments to collect taxes, GST is separated into many sorts.

Types of GST

1. CGST – Central Goods and Services Tax

The central government collects and levies the CGST, which is the centralized portion of GST. It has absorbed previous centralized taxes such as the Central Sales Tax, Central Excise Duty, Service Tax, Excise Duty under the Medical and Toilet Construction Act, Additional Excise Duty Countervailing Duty (CVD), Additional Customs Duty, and other centralized taxes. The CGST rate will be equal to the SGST rate.

2. SGST – State Goods and Services Tax

The state government is in charge of collecting and levying the SGST. Previous state taxes such as the state sales tax, luxury tax, entertainment tax, lottery levy, entry tax, octroi, and other taxes connected to the transportation of goods and services under state jurisdiction have been consolidated. The state government is responsible for the SGST revenue. The central government, on the other hand, supervises the state governing body’s essential framework. Each state is responsible for collecting SGST.

3. IGST – Integrated Goods and Services Tax

The national government collects IGST, however, it is levied by both the central government and the state governments. After collecting the tax, the Central Government distributes its portion (which is predetermined according to the agreement between the State Government and the Central Government) to the State in question. The IGST rate is calculated by adding the CGST and SGST rates together.

4. UTGST – Union Territory Goods and Services Tax

The concerned union territory levies UTGST on transactions that take place in any of India’s union territories. Union territories of India include Delhi (India’s capital), Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry.
