When indicating the electrical configuration of atoms, the usual notation for doing so is written as a sequence of the label names of each atomic subshell with the number of electrons assigned to that specific subshell put in superscript after each label name.
These subshells are made up of atomic orbitals, which are the building blocks of matter. The subshell labels s, p, d, and f are the four that are utilized in this example. The greatest number of electrons that may be accommodated in each of these subshells is 2, 6, 10, and 14 electrons in total.
For example, the subshells of a sulphur atom would be designated by the letters 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, and 3p (since sulphur has three electron shells). Except for the 3p shell, which contains four electrons, all of these shells are completely filled. In this case, the electronic configuration of sulphur can be expressed as 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4 (sulphur is 1s2 2p6 3s2 3p4).
Noble gases can also be used to write the electrical configuration of elements, which is a useful technique. They have entirely filled the outermost shells of these noble gases and can be prefixed to the outermost shell of the element whose electronic configuration must be specified.
For example, the electronic configuration of sulphur can be expressed as [Ne] 3s2 3p4 since the electronic configuration of Neon is 1s2 2s2 2p6, while sulphur has an electronic configuration of 3s2 3p4.
